The 15th of March 2012 the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science in California, USA tested the most powerful laser in the world. The concentrated beams of 192 lasers generated 411 trillion watts of peak power, more than one thousand times more energy than the whole United States consumes at any moment.
The experiment is part of the research the National Ignition Facility is conducting into nuclear fusion reactions, which are the source of power of stars such as our own sun.
